SPYNTEX

There has been a short period of silence while we were waiting for some news on the SPYNTEX development process. We are now ready with the up-date which we owe you. 

Time is running extremely fast and it has been an intensive and complicated period for us. The vital process of material selection and testing for SPYNTEX went extremely well but, after identifying the perfect material (unique in the furniture world), we discovered that the production start-up costs were 3 times more expensive than we had initially estimated. 

We have developed a very complex and technologically advanced matrix system with exchangeable internal parts. This system will allow us to use the same matrix body to extrude and develop all our product range from different formulas of Polymers and Encapsulated Natural Fibre Composites. 

We are aiming to produce an extremely high quality product and therefore we need maximum precision during the R&D process and enough factory research time to allow sufficient flexibility in test manufacturing for optimum fine tuning of the final product. 

It was very difficult to define the final matrix cost earlier in the process because, even after many consultations with different polymer and extrusion specialists, we had a series of, often contradictory, options for matrix solutions. However, after intensive research and visiting many potential partners, we have now dismissed all the smaller budget offers due to a lack of long-term sustainability and uncertain product result. 

We have stuck to our strategy of bringing to the market the best possible product even if it demands a higher initial investment than was originally planned. When we started our project we calculated that 50 000 GBP would be enough to start SPYNTEX manufacturing, but ,unfortunately, at the end of summer we received final calculations based on the optimum material / mould solution which means we are short of money. For full manufacturing set-up we now need an additional 150 000 GBP. 

 As a result, we have been intensively looking for additional funding since September. We were hoping to receive a loan from the bank, but since our company is an early stage start-up, non-equity funding has, so far, proved impossible. 

 Currently we are in negotiations with several strategic and private investors who have shown serious interest in our project and a final agreement for financing should be reached by December. Firstly we will order the matrix which requires 2.5 months to produce. Tooling set up, pre-production testing and first series manufacture requires another 2 months, so our estimation for deliveries is May 2018. 

Despite the financing issue, we are working hard to prepare all business processes and to be ready to implement our plans as soon as financing is in place.

Intellectual Property 

We received confirmation of our international design registration, which is valid in 48 countries (DM/095 524). This approved IP provides even more confidence for the end-user as to the uniqueness of the product.

Manufacturing 

Manufacturing partners: (matrix developers & producers and an extrusion factory) both located in England have been selected. After analysing various locations for initial manufacturing, we have decided that the product development phase including tooling and initial production should proceed in the UK because of the ‘know-how’ of the specialists and the existence of suitable manufacturing partners in order to maintain the optimum quality and control standards in this vital initial phase. 

Materials

After theoretical analysis and initial practical testing for the best material solutions from our short list of Polymers and Encapsulated Natural Fibre Composites, we have decided to produce first samples of all 6 mixes in order to select the optimum solution. Practical sample testing will allow us to select the best material with total confidence. Our expensive matrix allows us maximum flexibility to experiment with different kind of materials, with no extensive cost for additional tooling. 

Logistics 

We have selected the delivery partner (air, land, sea) and negotiated the conditions. 

We apologise for the delay in project development and want to ensure our valued backers that we are fully involved and doing our very best to move ahead as quickly as possible. However we are not willing to choose the cheapest, fastest and easiest way even though we have had many proposals for rapid prototyping, tooling and extrusion from China and other regions. For some products this could be the solution, but our product will be Nordic design produced in UK with no compromise - this is how we will ensure high manufacturing and material quality and deliver a product we will all be proud of.
